Hire Like HubSpot: Importance of Transparency in the Hiring Process

When it’s time to bring someone new onto your team, it can be challenging knowing where to start and how to communicate properly with your potential candidates. The number one piece of information that applies to everything in the interviewing and hiring processes is setting expectations.

Set Expectations

In interviewing, you want to make sure that the candidate understands what will be happening in terms of how many rounds of interviews you expect to conduct per candidate, how often they will be communicating, what they should be doing to prepare for the interview, and more.

All too frequently, hiring processes are just sales pitches to the candidates. This should be part of it, but it shouldn’t be all of it. You don’t want to fluff up the hiring process and job descriptions to make it seem like something it’s not. Once you fluff up a job description and hire someone to fill the role, they become an immediate flight risk. This is why setting expectations is one of the most important aspects of being transparent throughout the hiring process. When your new team member experiences what their job is actually like after you fluffed it up a bit, then you’re running the risk of them being disappointed and unhappy because the job isn’t what they thought it would be. This could lead to low retention rates and lack of job satisfaction in the long run, which would affect the team member’s overall performance.

The Honesty in Onboarding

During the employee onboarding process, it’s significant that you explain to them what day-to-day life will be like in the role. When they begin working and performing tasks, it should be exactly what they expect. This ranges from how hard they have to be working, the number of hours they should expect to be putting in each week, and what the dynamic is like in their role. You don’t want to mislead them.

Build Trust and You’ll Thrive

Lastly, transparency during the hiring process is that first step toward creating trust between yourself and the new member of your team. If you are honest with them about what to expect throughout the interviewing, hiring, and onboarding process and their expectations are met or exceeded, then there is now trust that can be built on in your organization.
